What is Osteopathic Therapy?

Osteopathic therapy focuses on the musculoskeletal system–that is, your muscles and bones. The foundational technique in osteopathic therapy is osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). OMT involves gentle pressure, stretching, and resistance techniques to manipulate the body’s muscles, joints, and other tissues to relieve pain, improve mobility, and promote overall well-being.

Our team will also incorporate additional noninvasive techniques as needed, such as therapeutic exercise, kinesio taping, postural corrections, and more.

What Does Osteopathic Therapy Treat?

Osteopathic therapy can address a wide range of conditions, including the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Post-concussion symptoms
  • Foot, ankle, hip, and knee pain
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Hand, shoulder, and elbow pain
  • Headaches
  • Postural problems
  • Sports injuries
  • Chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia

The Benefits of Osteopathic Therapy

Manages Pain

Osteopathic therapy helps return the body to its proper functions and movements, easing pain and other discomfort. In addition to addressing the underlying causes of chronic pain, osteopathic therapy is beneficial for relaxing tension, reducing joint stress, enhancing posture, and significantly extending the range of motion without adding to existing strains.

Rehabilitates Concussions

Concussions can cause a range of physical and cognitive symptoms. While these symptoms usually resolve on their own, osteopathic therapy can facilitate that process and help you manage any discomfort.

Prevents Future Injuries

Our team can help you improve muscular strength and endurance through patient education and specific exercises. Osteopathic therapy can also guide you in effectively enhancing your tissues’ health to become more mobile and resilient.

All of these components expand your range of motion, which helps prevent future injuries. Your therapist will teach you how to maintain recovery in your daily life to promote a healthy recovery.

What to Expect During Your Sessions

During your first appointment, your therapist will conduct a comprehensive assessment to better understand your condition, current symptoms, and recovery goals before designing a customized treatment plan.

Our Jenna Howe & Associates Osteopathy and Concussion Recovery practitioners value a manual approach to therapy, so they will most often use their hands to find areas of weakness, pain, or restriction within your body. You may be asked to perform some simple movements so your osteopath can observe your range of motion.

You’ll work on exercises that will improve pain and overall functionality. In addition, you will learn more about your condition, how you can maintain recovery, and preventative steps to take that will limit future injuries.
