As we continue to move forward in this age of technology, more and more people work from their desks for hours every day. This increasingly sedentary lifestyle is wreaking havoc on our health. In fact, individuals who spend their day in front of a screen have an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.[1] One research study even reported that those who sit the most during the day have a 17 percent higher mortality rate compared to individuals who sit the least amount of time daily.[2] These statistics are not encouraging.
In addition to these potential illnesses, desk jobs can also cause posture problems, mobility issues, weakened gluteal and hamstring muscles, tight hip flexors and low back pain. It’s important to seek medical attention if you begin to experience lower back pain. Here, Jenna Howe explains how osteopathic treatment can help alleviate your discomfort and prevent further complications from occurring.

Why Does Desk Work Cause Low Back Pain?
The lower back consists of discs, joints, muscles, and ligaments. All of these structures are capable of producing pain when put under stress. Even if one small element becomes damaged, the resulting inflammation can cause pain in the surrounding areas.
Individuals with desk jobs often sit for hours in unsuitable chairs. If the lower back is not properly supported, it can damage the discs in the spine, resulting in pain and discomfort.
Other Activities That Increase Low Back Pain
There are several other activities that can result in low back pain. If you are already experiencing discomfort from your desk job, it is important to:
- Avoid repetitive actions: Bending, twisting, and other repetitive motions can essentially change the way the back moves. Over days, weeks, and years, this can result in significant pain.
- Refrain from overworking the lower back: Heavy lifting and other similar activities can damage the back.
- Strengthen the back muscles: Those who lack strength or strong musculature in the lower back area are far more likely to suffer back pain compared to those who stay physically fit.
How to Care for Your Back
If you are prone to back pain, there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk of damage. For example:
- Bend at the knees when picking up children or lifting heavy objects. This will prevent overstretching and reduce the risk for damage.
- When carrying an object, hold it as close to your body as possible to reduce the strain on your neck and back.
- Whenever you are seated, whether at your desk or in front of the TV, make sure you are sitting up straight and ensure that the chair is fully supporting your back.
- Due to the mechanical nature of the back, it is a good idea to move around as much as possible throughout the day. Every 20 to 30 minutes, perform a small activity to keep back pain at bay.
