What is Osteopathy?
The biggest thing that differentiates osteopathy from other manual therapies is its holistic approach. Osteopathy emphasizes the interrelationship between the body’s structure and function, focusing on how the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and other systems work together. Osteopathic Manual Therapists view the body as a unified, self-healing organism and aim to treat the root cause of dysfunction, rather than just addressing symptoms. This contrasts with other manual therapies that might focus more specifically on isolated parts of the body or symptoms.
I’ve heard there are different types of Osteopathy, can you explain more about this?
The distinction between principles-based osteopathy and techniques-based osteopathy lies primarily in their focus and approach to treatment.
Principles-Based Osteopathy
- Holistic Philosophy: Emphasizes the underlying principles of osteopathy, such as the body’s self-healing abilities and the interconnectedness of body systems.
- Patient-Centered: Focuses on understanding the individual as a whole, considering their lifestyle, emotional state, and overall health rather than just symptoms.
- Conceptual Framework: Utilizes a broad understanding of anatomical and physiological concepts to guide treatment decisions, prioritizing patient education and empowerment.
Techniques-Based or Structural Osteopathy
- Specific Techniques: Emphasizes the application of specific manual techniques, such as visceral manipulation, soft tissue techniques, stretching/exercise recommendations, joint mobilization, Osteopathy in the cranial field/Craniosacral Therapy and many other Osteopathic Techniques to address musculoskeletal issues.
- Symptom-Driven: Often focuses more on treating specific symptoms or conditions through targeted interventions.
- Training and Skills: Practitioners may prioritize their skill set in various techniques, such as cranial osteopathy, visceral manipulation, or myofascial release, as primary tools for treatment.
Summary
While techniques-based osteopathy focuses on the application of specific methods to alleviate symptoms, principles-based osteopathy is rooted in a broader philosophical understanding of health and wellness, aiming to support the body’s overall function and self-regulation. At Jenna Howe and Associates we integrate both approaches in our practice.

What should I know about manual therapy treatments?
With manual therapy, it’s important to know that the overall goal is to restore pain-free mobility and function and to prevent the injury or pain from recurring.
Your Osteopathic Therapist will evaluate your movement patterns, identify the cause of your pain, and work to manage or eliminate it altogether.
Manual therapists are trained experts when it comes to musculoskeletal conditions. They work closely with other healthcare professionals to make sure that your treatment plan is as efficient and effective as possible. Manual therapy is a hands-on approach to relieving pain and restoring function.
While every patient’s condition and pain is unique, our osteopathic therapist will use a variety of gentle hands-on techniques, exercises, and equipment to relieve pain quickly and restore your function to optimum levels.
What should I wear for my treatments?
Dress comfortably in clothes that allow easy access for the therapist to examine your problem areas.
For treatments, loose-fitting clothes that are comfortable for gentle exercises is often a good choice to wear.
When will I notice relief?
Each patient’s diagnosis is different, so together with your referring professional (if you have one), Jenna will develop a plan of care that is right for you.
Your plan of care and number of visits will be determined during your first visit and explained to you by your osteopathic therapist.
Will I be able to continue with my sessions even after recovery?
Yes, once you have completed your therapy sessions, Jenna is happy to review your at-home continuing therapy program or provide maintenance treatments to keep you feeling your best.

Many people have access to Osteopathic coverage through their private health benefits or employee health benefits. We do not direct bill however you will have a receipt to submit for reimbursement.
